Doorstep Callers

With Spring approaching it is the time of year when activity by doorstep callers increases in rural villages so please be wary and discourage doorstep callers.

Any persons selling door to door are classified as PEDLARS and should hold a current PEDLARS CERTIFICATE (with photo ID) issued by Leicestershire Police upon background checks.

If in any doubt the Definition of a PEDLAR is as below:

DEFINITION OF A PEDLAR

The PEDLARS ACT 1871 STATES THAT A PEDLAR IS:
• Any hawker, pedlar, petty chapman, tinker, caster of metals, mender of chairs, or other person, who
• Without any horse or other beast drawing burden, travels and trades on foot
• Goes from town to town or to other men’s houses,
• Carrying to sell or exposing for sale
• Any goods, wares, or merchandise, or procuring orders for goods, wares, or merchandise immediately to be delivered, or selling or offering for sale his skill in handicraft
